Stephen Leslie Aston

Year of crime:
1993/1994
Year conviction was overturned:
2010

Mr Aston was convicted of sexual abuse, after two children that he babysat claimed he abused them. At trial, uncontested medical experts who had examined the victims said that one victim had been subjected to penetrative abuse.

The Criminal Cases Review Commission obtained fresh evidence in view of research carried out since the trial, which showed medical knowledge in relation to the physical signs of child sexual abuse had changed. An expert report concluded that findings of the trial experts were no longer supportive of abuse, and Mr Aston’s convictions were quashed on that basis.
