Lorraine Allen

Years in prison:
1.3
Year of crime:
1998
Year conviction was overturned:
2005

Lorraine Allen was convicted of manslaughter of her baby, Patrick. She called the GP after he had difficulty breathing and the GP concluded he was well. Later Allen could not wake Patrick up. She called an ambulance crew but they were unable to resucitate him and he died. The prosecution’s case was that the combination of symptoms was evidential of shaken baby syndrome. On appeal, a new body of evidence was introduced that showed that the symptoms were not necessarily evidence of a non accidental head injury and could have been caused in other ways.
