Tarlochan Singh Gill was convicted of the murder of Wati Suri. According to the West Midlands Crime Squad, Gill had confessed to committing the murder. This was the only evidence linking him to the crime. This evidence was given by Detective Sergeant James, whose evidence had been found to be unreliable in three other cases. As a result of this, the conviction was quashed.
