Stephen Miller

Years in prison:
2
Year of crime:
1988
Year conviction was overturned:
1992

Tony Paris, Yusef Abdullahi and Stephen Miller were convicted of the murder of Lynette White, a 20 year old sex worker, who was found mutilated in her flat. Stephen was questioned for 14 hours before confessing (police bullied and hectored Miller to get him to confess in a way judges were “horrified” by). The case against the men comprised accounts of eyewitnesses, confessions to civilians, and Millers recorded confession. Following the convictions the main eyewitnesses and civilians withdrew their evidence (and pled guilty to perjury, claiming that they had been pressured by the police). Subsequently Jeffrey Gafoor was traced through DNA analysis and he admitted the crime.
