Patricia Bass

Years in prison:
2.5
Year of crime:
1992
Year conviction was overturned:
1996, 1998

Patricia Bass was convicted of the murder of her mother, who was found dead in her house. She had been beaten with a hammer. The prosecution suggested Bass had been motivated by greed as she would inherit from her mother. On appeal, it was found that the trial judge was wrong to allow evidence about money in Bass’ account to be admitted. This had been a gift but created a “dangerous and prejudicial” situation. It was also found the trial judge had misled the jury about crucial scientific evidence. There was also evidence someone else had confessed but this was found to not be relevant to the appeal.
