Justin Plummer

Years in prison:
3
Year of crime:
1997
Year conviction was overturned:
2021

Mr Plummer was convicted of the murder of a woman who was found dead in the mobile home she shared with her partner. He was a prolific burglar, and the prosecution argued that he had murdered the woman during a burglary when she disturbed him. They presented footwear mark evidence that linked his right show to marks found on the victim’s face. Mr Plummer’s conviction was overturned when new forensic evidence suggested that the footwear mark evidence was fundamentally flawed and the jury were misled. Two of the prosecution experts who gave evidence did not meet the standards required to conduct reliable comparisons and appeared to have more expertise than they actually did.
