Mr Monks was convicted of food safety offences. He was fined and ordered to pay costs, with four months imprisonment in default. He ended up going to prison for two months when he couldn’t pay the costs. His conviction was overturned when related charged were stayed as an abuse of process and new evidence cast doubt on the credibility of evidence of a prosecution witness.
