Colin Wallace was convicted of the manslaughter of Jonathon Lewis. Lewis was found drowned and battered in the River Arun. At a trial, a home office pathologist told the jury that Lewis had probably been hit by a karate blow. On appeal, evidence was introduced to suggest that injuries were not consistent with a karate blow, and that evidence of Wallace’s background (in the SAS) that appeared in the newspapers might have influenced the jury. The appeal was allowed and Wallace’s conviction was quashed.
