Barry George was convicted of the murder of British journalist Jill Dando. The only confirmed signting of the killer described a six-foot-tall white man around 40 years old. The police focused on the possibility Dando was killed by a stalker. There was evidence that George could have been involved and that he had tried to flee the area in a taxi. On a search of his house, police found underdeveloped photos of women, along with maps of his street, magazine cuttings of Dando and weapon paraphernalia. A forensic analysis of George’s coat revealed a single particle of gunshot residue. This contained the same elements of gunshot residue from the cartridge case and head hair found at the scene. The Court of Appeal heard evidnece that this crucial forensic evidence was just as likely to have come from an extraneous source as it was to have come from a gun fired by George. Although they couldn’t know how much the jury relied on this, the verdict was ruled unsafe as this evidence shouldn’t have been admissible. George was found not guilty at a retrial.
