Andrew Adams
Years in prison:
14
Year of crime:
1990
Year conviction was overturned:
2007
Andrew Adams was convicted of the murder of Jack Royal. Jack had previously been acquitted of the murder of David Thompson (the brother of Andrew’s girlfriend) on the basis of self-defence. The Court of Appeal found sufficient criticisms and failures in the original trial to render the verdict unsafe. This included incompetent defence representation, non-disclosure by the prosecution, and errors in summing up. There was also evidence of jury bias in the case, although it was not decided on this basis.
